Simple measures to improve vision include using good lighting and asking your optician to ensure that your glasses are accurate. Further improvement may be possible by increasing contrast and magnification. Your Eye Surgeon will consider whether treatment for other eye conditions such as poor tear film and cataract that may help.
Discuss with your family or friends the arrangement of your home, furniture and lighting. Illuminated magnifiers, talking clocks, large button telephones, large print and talking books and numerous other devices are available. Consider marking the edges of steps and changing the colour of flooring and other surfaces to make things visible and safe.
If you are eligible for registration as visually impaired, a special Certificate of Visual Impairment must be completed by your Consultant Eye Surgeon in order to facilitate the home assistance and additional help that may be available to you. There are numerous local and national organisations to support people with poor vision.
