Deciding on surgery

If you have early cataracts, then a change of glasses and good lighting may be all that is needed. If you have difficulty seeing well enough to do the things you like to, this may make little difference and cataract surgery should be considered.

The only treatment for a cataract is surgery. Without treatment, a cataract will slowly progress and the vision will continue to decrease. Leaving a cataract to become advanced may make surgery more difficult and increase the risks.

You are never too old to have cataract surgery. If it will help your vision and make daily activities easier, it is usually a good idea. Your Eye Surgeon cannot make the decision for you but talking with him can help you weigh up the benefits and risks.
